Restylane® and Juvederm®
What are Restylane and Juvederm?
Restylane and Juvederm are injectable gels made primarily of hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the skin. They are administered to replace volume and fill areas of mild to moderate volume loss of the face due to the natural process of aging and weight loss. They are both FDA-approved to fill the lines of the face around the mouth, nose, and lips, often referred to as "marionette lines" or "parentheses." Other areas of the face can be treated off-label.
How are Restylane and Juvederm administered?
Both products are injected into the dermis of the skin using a precise, small bore needle. Upon initial consultation, Dr. Campbell will work with you to help determine which areas of the face would respond best to treatment and how many syringes might be needed. For pain prevention/relief, a topical numbing cream is applied to the skin for several minutes before the procedure, and both Restylane and Juvederm contain another numbing agent to make sure your treatment is comfortable.
How long does it take to see results? How long do results last?
Most people notice desired changes to the treated areas immediately. There may be some swelling which can last up to 72 hours but usually dissipates within 24 hours. Duration of results can vary from individual to individual and area to area, but improvements commonly last 6-12 months and decrease gradually over time.
What are the costs of Restylane and Juvederm and are treatments covered by insurance?
Since these are elective cosmetic procedures, insurance does not cover treatment costs. The cost can vary based on the amount of product needed, which is different from person to person. Dr. Campbell and her staff will help tailor a specific treatment plan for each patient and aid in determining cost before any injections are performed.
What is the difference between Injectables?
While some patients prefer one agent over another, injectables work in an almost identical manner and are both quite effective. If effectiveness of one of the agents starts to diminish over time, it is often useful to switch to the other to regain the same results. Again, a board certified dermatologist will help guide to the optimal product for use based during your consultation.
DYSPORT & BOTOX
Facts About Frown Lines
Frown lines are caused by a number of factors, and not always caused by age.
Although age is a factor, over time, the muscles above and between the eyebrows repeatedly contract and tighten, during frowning or squinting, and this repeated movement forms lines between the eyebrows.
How soon will I notice results?
Usually within 2-5 days, though full results may take a few days longer.
How long do the results of Dysport and Botox last?
Depending on the individual, these agents typically last three to six months.
Can Botox and Dysport be used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)?
Yes. This is most commonly performed in the underarm area, although can also be done on the palms and soles. This treatment is also offered at Cypress Dermatology.
Are Dysport and Botox treatments covered by insurance?
Since they are considered elective, insurance does not cover cosmetic Dysport or Botox injections. Please visit us at Cypress Dermatology for a consultation and to discuss cost and payment options.
What are Dysport and Botox and how do they work?
Dysport and Botox are injectable medications (both forms of botulinum toxin) that have been proven safe in clinical trials and are used to treat facial lines that result from movements of the muscles of facial expression. They work by paralyzing the muscle groups that are specifically targeted by the treating physician. When a muscle group can no longer work, the muscles in the area relax and lines soften. Both Dysport and Botox are offered as treatments at Cypress Dermatology.
Where/How are Dysport/Botox injected?
Injections are performed with a very small needle, usually into the area between the eyebrows (glabella), crow's feet, forehead, and neck (off-label use). There is usually minimal pain associated and typically no anesthesia is required. Treatment usually takes less than five minutes.
What is the difference between Dysport and Botox?
While some patients prefer one agent over another, Dysport and Botox work in an almost identical manner and are both quite effective. They are both forms of botulinum toxin and can be used to treat the same areas. If effectiveness of one of the agents starts to diminish over time, it is often useful to switch to the other to regain the same results.
COSMETIC LASER TREATMENT
Cutera® Excel V
The Cutera Excel V is the latest in laser technology combining the power and precision of both the 532 nm KTP and 1064 nm Nd:YAG lasers. This laser offers the capability of treating a wide range of vascular, age-related, and pigmentary conditions and the enhanced healing and recovery time that goes along with its advanced cooling system.
What types of vascular lesions are treated with the Excel V?
Port wine stains
Telangiectasias (fine blood vessels)
Vessels associated with facial rosacea
How does it work?
The Excel V works by delivering controlled pulses of light energy causing the blood in the targeted vessels to clot together, eventually resulting in its destruction and disappearance. This is safe and does not cause an interruption of blood flow to the area as blood is redirected to deeper vessels.
Are treatments painful?
Patients usually experience a mild stinging sensation when an area is being treated. Generally, no pain medications are required and the sensation only lasts a few seconds.
How many treatments will I need?
Most small vessels will resolve after 3-5 treatments, although some patients may experience success after only 1 or 2 treatments. The number of sessions that will be required depends on the number, color, and size of the vessels being targeted. Every patient is different, and Dr. Campbell will examine you in consultation to help determine how many treatments will likely be needed and what kind of results might be expected. Treatments are generally performed every 4 weeks.
What are possible side effects?
Many patients report no side effects, but those most commonly reported are mild redness and minimal swelling of the skin of the treated area. These effects typically last about 48-72 hours.
When can I expect to see results?
Most patients find that the majority of the treated veins show significant improvement within 8-12 weeks of treatment. However, your final results may not be apparent for several months. Over time, it is possible for new veins to appear. To remove them these new veins will need treatment as well.
Cutera’s Excel V laser platform includes a patented procedure known as Laser Genesis. This microsecond 1064 nm treatment is an excellent treatment option for diffuse redness, rosacea, and scars (including hypertrophic and keloid scars), as well as being an excellent skin rejuvenation treatment. Think of it as a "laser facial." It works quickly to reduce redness while minimizing scars and wrinkles by stimulating collagen production. Ask about the Laser Genesis procedure if you struggle with overall redness or have an upcoming event. We know you would love to have that "glow!"
Other Conditions Treated by the Excel V:
Unwanted freckles and blotchy pigment
Benign skin growths such as seborrheic keratosis

Kybella is an injectable formulation of purified deoxycholic acid, which is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. In its naturally occurring state deoxycholic acid helps in breaking down dietary fat for absorption. Kybella is a nonsurgical treatment to help eliminate fat under the chin, or a "double chin."
Who is eligible to receive a Kybella treatment?
If you can pinch the skin underneath your chin area and can feel fat under the skin, then you may be a candidate for Kybella.
How are Kybella treatments performed?
Kybella is administered by tiny injections under the skin in the submental (under the chin) area. Each treatment takes about 15-20 minutes. Typically numbing injections and ice are used to relieve the pain of injections.
How long do results of Kybella treatments last?
You may need one or several treatments with Kybella depending on how much fat under the chin you have. Once results are achieved, however, the results are permanent. Dr. Campbell will see you in consultation prior to performing Kybella injections to evaluate you carefully and help determine the best and safest approach to eliminating fat under your chin.

Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is the safest and most efficient solution for permanently ridding yourself of unwanted hair. Its popularity as one of the most sought after non-invasive cosmetic procedures is not surprising, as so many people can now enjoy the lifestyle of lasting smooth skin and the convenience of no longer having to shave.
Lasers treat hair follicles best when they are in their active state of growth. Because hair has three phases of development, Anagen (the growing phase), Catagen (the resting phase) and Telogen (the shedding phase) not all hairs are simultaneously growing. As a result, multiple treatments are needed to achieve the highest levels of permanent hair removal.
Coupling our laser platform with our highly trained and certified laser professionals, we offer superior results that typically range in permanent removal of 85-99% of all treated hairs. On average, 5-6 sessions spaced roughly 8 weeks apart are needed to achieve such optimal results. Individual response can certainly vary, and we will explore expectations with you once we understand your skin type and hair characteristics. In addition, we stand behind our promise and ensure the highest value with hair laser removal at Cypress Dermatology
How Laser Hair Removal Works
The pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the energy produced by the laser, resulting in its destruction and preventing the hair from ever regenerating. To achieve this result, the hair follicle must contain the needed pigment to absorb the laser’s energy. As such, white and grey hair is non-responsive.
Blond and red hair may be treated, but not as effectively as darker hair. As a general rule, hair must be darker than the surrounding skin in order to be effectively treated.
Safe and effective treatment is achieved by destroying hair follicles without causing damage to the epidermis (the tissue making up the skin composition surrounding the hair shaft). In selecting optimal treatment settings, the technician must balance many variables, which is why the right laser platform combined with a highly experienced staff is essential. At Cypress Dermatology, we pride ourselves in a highly trained and experienced staff. In fact, we have performed tens of thousands of treatments. It’s how we set ourselves apart. Our laser technology also allows us to distinguish our services. We are able to highly customize energy levels given your skin tone, hair coarseness, and hair color. By doing so, we are able to best select optimal levels of energy to destroy the hair follicle while maintaining FDA approved safety parameters that are designed to prevent injury to the epidermis. As such, our certified laser professionals coupled with our selection of laser technology ensures that you receive the highest value, safety, and quality of treatment in today’s laser hair removal market.
Lasting Smooth Skin
Once we destroy a hair follicle, it will never produce hair again. Any remaining hair follicles will produce hairs that are lighter and thinner, requiring much less attention than before. Again, we offer clearance of roughly 85-99%, with some variation from person to person. New hair follicles may form over time as a result of aging, hormonal changes, and individual genetics. For these reasons, some clients elect to schedule annual touch-up treatments to maintain their results.
Benefits of Laser Hair Removal
Several conditions respond quite favorably to laser hair removal – sometimes even being the best reatment option. In addition, the added benefits include lasting smooth skin free of irritation while recapturing hours of extra time from no longer having to shave.
Pseudofolliculitis is the inflammation of ingrown hair, and can oftentimes result in pustules which resemble acne. While predominately seen in men of African American decent, pseudofolliculitis effects both men and women and can form almost anywhere on the body that is routinely shaved. Laser Hair Removal provides the ideal solution. By ridding the area of its unwanted hair, your skin will be free from the constant attack of curly ingrown hair.
Hirsutism is the excessive growth of hair, and it may occur in both men and women. Hirsutism is typically of greater concern to women, however, as the symptoms may include thinker, darker hair in the facial and chest areas. (It’s important to also note that Hirsutism may be a symptom of a larger and more serious medical condition. And while Clearstone Laser Hair Removal serves ours clients by alleviating the frustration of unwanted hair, we do not diagnose Hirsutism nor treat any underlining medical condition.)
Keratosis Pilaris is a very common skin condition often referred to as “chicken skin” and primarily affects the area surrounding the triceps. While laser hair removal is not a treatment for curing Keratosis Pilaris, people have experienced positive results in a related condition by ridding the area of unwanted hair. The formation of Keratosis follicularis, where hair becomes susceptible to tiny follicular papules, is greatly reduced by the elevation of the hair growth. As a result, the area becomes clearer and smoother as the aggravated hair follicles are destroyed.
In addition to forgoing medical benefits, laser hair removal is an exceptional method to increase self-confidence and live an even more active lifestyle. In fact, the convenience, efficiency, and appeal of smooth skin is recognized by triathletes, swimmers, unners, cyclists, body builders, and beach goers alike. Laser hair removal is a great way to keep yourself active and ready to participate in all of life’s great adventures.
Potential Side Effects
Mild to moderate discomfort may occur during treatment. While many areas of the body, such as the backside or legs, are usually treated with little discomfort, more sensitive areas may experience an increased feeling with the destruction of the hair follicles. Generally, any discomfort is described as a “pinching” feeling that lasts less than a second. Moreover, it’s almost always described as being a lot less painful than other methods of hair removal – especially waxing, using an epilator, or using creams. Moreover, our clients agree that the lasting results of laser hair removal are well worth any temporary discomfort. If you’re thinking about treating an area that’s more sensitive, we can apply a complimentary set of test applications so that you can better determine your preferences.
Erythema, which presents itself as redness of the area treated, generally begins to lessen within a few minutes and is usually gone within a few hours or by the next day. Important to note, it is generally considered a desirable side effect because it evidences effective damage to the hair follicles.
Pre and Post Treatment Considerations
In order to realize the highest level of efficacy, it’s important to take a moment to review these pre and post treatment considerations. By printing this list, you’ll have a comprehensive check-list for remembering these essential guidelines to make the most of your laser hair removal appointment. In addition, we’ll review these at the time of making your appointment and answer any questions you may have. By doing so, we’re able to provide the highest level of care while guaranteeing the best results.
Pre Treatment Care
Post Treatment Care
Please give a close shave to the areas receiving treatment the morning of your appointment. For harder to reach places, such as the backside, we can provide assistance just prior to application of our laser.
The area to be treated should be freshly cleaned and left free from any make-up, perfumes, lotions, creams,and/or antiperspirants. (You can, of course, remove these applications in one of our private treatment rooms prior to the application of our laser. And we make available complimentary antiperspirant post laser hairremoval.)
Areas to be treated should be as light as possible, so avoid tanning 2 weeks leading up to treatments. Andwhile we can safely treat darker skin by scaling down the level of energy, doing so makes the applications less effective. Also, avoid sunless tanning products leading up to your appointments.
Do not wax or otherwise remove the roots of the hair follicles 3 weeks prior to receiving laser hair removal.Studies suggest, however, that waxing 3 weeks prior to an appointment may increase overall efficacy – as every treated hair is now in its active state of growth.
Do not bleach any hair to be treated, or lighten its color.
If you have lighter hair, such as blond, white, grey, or red, please advise us six weeks in advance so that wecan provide you with the proper application needed to make treatments effective and to give insight as to the proper level of expectations.
You must advise us of any medications you’re currently taking or have taken in the past 6 months whichincreases sensitivity to light. Examples include several antibiotic and antifungal medications as well as isotretinoin.
We will apply a soothing aloe and vitamin E lotion to treated areas.
There is no downtime with laser hair removal, so you can immediately engage in normal activities following your appointment.
We advise the use of sunscreen for the next 48 hours, and will gladly provide you with complimentary lotion depending upon the area benefiting from laser hair removal.
Immediate and continuous sun exposure, tanning, or working under halogen lights is to be avoided.
Remember, immediate redness (erythema) is to be expected and generally goes away in a few minutes or hours. Important to note, it is generally considered a desirable side effect because it evidences effective damage to the follicles. However, as erythema presents itself as redness to the treated area, most people prefer to schedule appoints for treatment of the face or other visible areas on a Friday or over the weekend so that normal skin tone returns before the start of a new week.
Laser Hair Removal is considered to be an exceedingly safe, non-invasive cosmetic procedure. And as we utilize only the highest level of medical equipment and a professionally trained staff, we offer the most comprehensive treatments while insuring the lowest incident rates. Like any procedure, however, there are certain risks and uncertainties. We believe it is important that we make these freely known prior to your appointment so that you can ask any questions and so that we can address any concerns.
Rare side effects are:
Rarely, vesiclation and local crusting may occur. These are effectively treated with antibiotic/steroid creams and mild emollients.
Rarely, secondary infection may occur, but is effectively treated with antibiotics. To best avoid secondary infection, clean the area to receive laser hair removal prior to your arrival and wear clean clothes pre and post procedure.
Burning may occur. Incident rates are very low, less than 1%. A burn may blister and be followed by pigmentation change that can be, but is not likely to be, permanent.
Perifollicular edema presents itself as mild swelling, and while not very common, is also temporary in nature and is not necessarily undesirable.
Almost always temporary, hyper (darkening) or hypo (lightening) pigmentation may occur. Incident rates arelow, and are usually less than 1%. It may last a few days to several months and is treated with sunblock or a mild steroid cream such as hydrocortisone.
Approximately 2-10% of clients will experience accelerated hair growth, as the first treatment sends all hairfollicles into an active state of growth. Counterintuitive at first, this is actually a desired result, as these individuals will usually only require two treatments in total to obtain desired hair removal results.
Previous history of herpes simplex risks precipitation of active lesions. As laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure, please advise us of this condition so that we can collaboratively assess the benefits for a defined treatment area.
